Pregnancy Hot Topic - Ultrasounds

How do you feel about ultrasounds? The FDA is cautioning against Fetal "Keepsake" Images (especially videos) and OTC heartbeat monitors. (Here is a press release from the FDA.) Are you concerned or do you think it's just hysteria? Do you think ultrasounds are done too often and how do you feel about 3D ultrasound centers popping up all over?

Share your thoughts with us, and we'll archive the thread for our Pregnancy Channel.

Thanks!
Mari

Physical therapists have been using ultrasound as a treament modality for decades, with ample research verifying it's safe when used within certain parameters. The notion now that ultrasound, itself, is somehow dangerous seems not based on any research, but seems to be a reflex reaction by the FDA because people other than doctors are utilizing the technology.

I think ultrasounds are like anything else--too much of a good thing is bad. I think limited use of them is probably fine, but they do use radiation and repeated exposure when there isn't a reason probably isn't a good idea.

ultrasounds utlize sonographic technology or sound waves, not radiation.

PT and ultrasound

I am a PT... and in response to someone's arguement saying PT's have been doing US for decades... we have, and I love it. However, I would NEVER do it on or even around a pregnant stomach... not on the back even. Ankle or hand, yes.

Ultrasound should be reserved for necessary diagnostic modality on a pregnant stomach.

My opinion of course.
