Arrow February '07 discussion thread: The Goose Girl

Here is our discussion thread for The Goose Girl, our February group read. As always, be cautious of reading the posts below if you haven't finished, as they may contain spoilers.

I have less than 100 pages left, and I hope to finish today. I have been absolutely flying through this book! I can't wait to see how it ends. I know she based this on a Grimm's fairy tale; I think I'd like to search it out once I finish Hale's book.

I didn't know this was based on a fairy tale. Let me know if you find it! I'm about 1/3rd of the way through and I am absolutely loving this book. Just like with the other Hale novel I read, I'm finding myself wishing I could write like this. I can't wait until Susy is old enough to read her books with me!

Susan, if you look up "Grimm's Goose Girl" on Amazon, you'll find a few books. I just requested one from the library, but I'll have to pick it up when Charon's not with me because it includes some of their darker stories that she's probably not ready for, and it looks like a beautiful book that she'd love to page through. It's called The Annotated Brothers Grimm and it has an introduction by A.S. Byatt.

I finished Hale's book last night. Loved it. I think I'll request her Princess Academy from the library, too, while I'm at it. That's the one you read, right Susan? I'll post more later; don't read any further posts from me here until you finish the book!

Yes, I read Princess Academy and thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm not even halfway through Goose Girl yet, so I'll have to stop clicking on this thread! I don't want to know any spoilers.

Caryl, did you realize that The Goose Girl is the first of a series? I just requested the next two books from the library, Enna's Burning and River Secrets.

I also read the original fairy tale and was surprised and intrigued by how much of the original tale she kept in her book. I really liked seeing how she altered it and used it for her own story.

No! Well, this is going to be wonderful. I just got Princess Academy at the library, but maybe I'll request and read these other two Hale books first.

ETA: I just found this about Enna Burning on Hale's website. Neat, huh?

I just got the Grimms book from the library yesterday, too! I look forward to reading the story.

ETA: And I see Hale's got Grimms' The Goose Girl on her website, too! This page has all kinds of good stuff about The Goose Girl.

Orson Scott Card wrote a nice review of The Goose Girl on his blog. I originally picked up The Princess Academy after stumbling across his review of it. I have to agree with him that:

Shannon Hale is already, after only a few books, one of our best writers of fantasy.

I picked up Enna Burning at the library today and am really looking forward to it. After finishing TGG I wasn't quite ready to let go of the world of Bayern. I'm glad I don't have to! I want to spend some more time browsing around Hale's website, too. I loved her list of reading suggestions. Lots of books I've either read and loved or have been meaning to read for some time now.

Finished it yesterday - and now reading this thread, I'm so glad that there are more! I kept thinking - "What's Ani going to do for the kingdom now that she's experienced life as a common goose girl?" I was disappointed that Hale didn't really address that and I'm so glad that it looks like she will. I'll be at the library soon to pick up the sequals

I loved this book so much that I have the next two books. I'm about 1/3 of the way through Enna Burning and I have River Secrets also checked out. This 2nd book is about Enna but Isi and Geric are in the book along with Razo and Finn.

I think The Goose Girl would be a wonderful movie. Anybody know if it's been made?
I really love this author's writing style. She was obviously born to be a story teller!
