I finished this a couple of days ago and I keep turning it over in my mind. Was the governess a lunatic or was she the heroine, trying to protect her charges? I go back and forth with that. Did Mrs. Grose really believe the governess? Since we're hearing the governess' version, I'm not so sure. Most of the time, I want to believe in the governess - after all, the narrator at the beginning said she went on to other jobs and did well. But, there's that doubt and maybe James does that on purpose to make us think
I was really bothered by Miles from the moment he was introduced in the story. I felt something sinister in him and that he was the root of everything, but with that ending . . . I'm have serious doubts I was right. What do YOU think? I enjoyed the book to the point where I'll read it again after some distance to see if I get a different feel for it. I am continuing with the rest of the stories in the book now. Mari
