I really enjoyed this book. It was my 2nd Shirley Jackson book; I read We Have Always Lived in the Castle last Halloween. I enjoyed Hill House much more. I wasn't quite so odd, and the characters were more realistic. Hill House was unusual, a little scary and haunting but not as weird as Castle.

I enjoyed the various characters; most had some humorous aspect that added to the book. Dr. Montague's wife and the "planchette" was a hoot. I got a little caught up in Eleanor and then began to realize it was Eleanor that gets caught up in the house - I felt a little creeped out by that.

The ending was a little too predictable but then, I don't think it could have ended any other way.

Does anyone know if this was made into a movie? I think it'd be a good one. I think I'll make this my annual Halloween read.
