Thumbs down Sears Credit Cards

We have had Sears credit cards for over a decade and always liked the good service. However, recently Sears sold their credit card division and we have had nothing but hastles ever since. The final straw was this last billing cycle. The cycle started on the 7th of the month. DH thought he'd go ahead and make our payment when he was at Sears on the 6th. Then he went to make other purchases and was told his limit was exceded. He was confused, as he had just paid off the card. He called and they said since he had technically made two payments in the same billing cycle the second one would not credit to the account until the 15th...NINE DAYS LATER! Then, we started getting Sunday afternoon phone calls--two weeks in a row--asking for an "overdue" payment. Since DH paid EARLY, we were being called delinquent! They had the audacity to bill us a LATE fee for being EARLY! I thought I had it straightened out last week, and then yesterday afternoon they called again asking for money. What is with Sunday afternoon calls? Anyway, DH is going to pay the thing off today and close the account.

This is only one problem we have had. The first was a few months ago when they stopped the card without contacting us. Their reason? We had changed our address. DUH! We moved over a year before that and changed our address at that time. Every six weeks or so their is some new problem...

IMO, Sears needs to get their name off that card ASAP 'cuz their customer service rating is going to drop...

Thank goodness Sears was the first CC we paid off. I had been debating which one. I would think that they would have to by law post the money as soon as they received it. Unfair to charge more for interest for the xtra 9 days when they have use of your money for those 9 days.

I would never use a Sears credit card - - certain purchases may be secured which means they could repo the item in the event you default on your payments (not that I ever would, but I don't like those kind of credit arrangements).

I had my Sears card stolen a long time ago and the guy who stole it bought a VCR over the phone with it and then had a girl friend pick it up in person at the store - - no problem. They never even checked ID or anything. Now THAT is bad customer service.

I got rid of my Sears card a long time ago. It was the first charge card I ever got. It helped me establish a line of credit, but, their interest rates were crazy.

Sears is NOTORIOUS for this kind of thing. I don't know if they do it anymore, but they used to report you to the credit bureau after just one late payment. No matter how tempting, DH and I have never gotten a Sears card.

OMG!!! I can't believe I just read all that! It is all backward! I work for a credit card company and we do like the total oposite, if you want to make a payment on your account every day you should be able to and it should count within 24 hours at the latest! As for the late fee for being early! that is so stupid! Get rid of that card now, they do not know how to do business at ALL!!! Good ridance!

We closed our Discover card for similar mixups - they are owned by Sears. Twice, not once, but twice, they took our payment, cashed the check, and didn't credit our account. I'd have to go to the bank to have the check microfilm retrieved and mail them a copy to prove that I had made the payment. There was a small fee for that from my bank as well. The first time this happened I chalked it up as a mistake...the second time I closed the account. My time is more valuable than that.

We also has an incidence somewhere in there where our security was breached and someone had attempted to use a duplicate of our card but with the wrong expiration date on it at a gas station...in Japan. So they obviously had to close that account and send us new cards which was a hassle in itself.

No way would I ever get another Discover card again...
