Question for the experts

How long is basic training for new navy recruits? My stepson leaves April 8th, two days after he turns 20. We're trying to figure out when his graduation will be so we can make travel plans.

Also, he says he will only be allowed 4 guests to his graduation. Is that the case? He says he was going to invite his mother and brother, his father and I. I know my IL's are already planning on going out for it as well. I just want to know if this is going to turn into a bidding war.

TIA!

I think it is 8 weeks Tami. I don't know about the number of guests. Maybe once he gets there he can give you more information.

I think its 8 weeks too. I am not sure about the guests...like Dawn said, he will get more info when he gets there.

Does he know what is planning on doing as a job in the Navy? Subs, Surface Ships, Aviation?

If he gets stationed to Norfolk VA, let us know...My husband will be deployed, but if he has any questions on the area, I'd be happy to help.

Thank you!

Colleen, we know almost nothing of his plans. Sometimes he says he "hasn't been told anything", then he seems like he has everything all laid out. We didn't even know when he was leaving for basic until a few weeks ago and he says he's known for months.

Thanks Liz! That was terrific!

Now I have to start thinking about getting dh and I to Michigan for Matt's graduation. I don't think I can bring myself to fly. The mere thought of it makes me dizzy.

Um, graduation won't be in Michigan. Sorry, military people, clicked on the wrong forum, and saw this. All naval recruits now must go through Great Lakes training facility in the Northern region of Illinois, close to the Wisconsin boarder. Tami, pm, and I can tell you all about it. I went to my cousin's graduation about 8 years ago, and it was really interesting.

PLUS, you'll be about 40 minutes from ME, essentially right on the path I take to see my ILs. Flying would be easy as pie, but you would need to rent a car, because O'Hare is about 30 minutes away from the only hotel near base. You must make reservations early. If you're doing that anyway, I suggest driving a couple exits past the one you need and getting a nicer grade of hotel and more options for dining.
