I feel like a dope. I have to take a fruit salad to a brunch this Sunday, but it can't have bananas because the hostess is allergic. I have never made fruit salad in my life, and would have probably done bananas, apples, oranges, and grapes with a little lemon juice and sugar, how my host mom used to make it in Argentina.
Without the bananas, though, my recipe is kind of boring. So, I was thinking of doing something a little different. Anyone have any suggestions? I was thinking strawberries and Kiwi would be nice, but what else? My mom has a recipe that has cool whip in it, but I thought it might not be a good idea to stray too much from what I was asked to do.
Any suggestions would be great!

I just wander around the produce market and pick up whatever looks good. Melon balls, grapes cut in half, kiwi peeled & sliced, peaches & nectarines in small chunks, strawberries cut in half, mango & papaya peeled & cut into small chunks, mandarin orange segments. If you can find star fruit, slice them crosswise to make stars. If I have a glass bowl, I make sure to get them up against the glass; otherwise I lay a few on top.
If I'm making a mixed fruit salad, I usually keep the dressing simple, often just lemon juice & sugar. With so many fruit flavors, you don't want to overwhelm it all with a heavy hand on the dressing. I've also done a very simple dressing of champagne with a bit of orange juice which is a little fancier but it complents the fruit instead of overpowering it.

I've always just wandered at our local fruit/veg stand to see what was available and looked good. This is my usual:
Apples
Strawberries
Rasberries
Couple different melon ball options
grapes -red & green
and the best part --BlueBerries :)
I just mix the fruit together and thats it, the juice from the Berries is enough. I also usually add bananas, but left them out as you are not using them.
Have fun at your Party!

I usually make the following but with bananas:
Strawberries
red seedless grapes
apples
pinapple chuncks
almond slivers
lemon juice
drizzle with fat free poppy seed dressing, or put on the side
I think Kiwi or star fruit would be a nice addition. I don't add melon because I don't like it, but most people do.

I would make sure that no one is allergic to any kinds of fruit before you go shopping to avoid those kinds of fruits. Then I would go and use the kinds of fruits that are both available without allergens and in the "season".
One fruit salad that we make is by using the "berry family" it gets wonderful reviews.
Strawberries
Blueberries
Blackberries
Raspberries
Bosenberries
Elderberries
and then put a little sugar substitute on top to add some extra flavor, but not too much. On top add a little color by adding some pepperment leaves in a star design.
Good luck and I hope you enjoy your get-together and whatever salad you choose goes over with success.

When my Mom does fruit salad she mixes OJ, sugar, and a little Peach Schnapps and mixes it through the fruit. It is always a hit. I don't know how much of each, but if you like I'll ask her and try to post later. :)
