I wanted to go UC, but DH wouldn't have it! We compromised, and the midwife stayed in the kitchen until/unless I needed her. Our first daughter was born with just DH & me in the room. Our second & third daughters were born with two doulas and the midwife in addition to DH & me. Our first son was born with just DH & me in the room, and our second son was born with about 20 people in the room! (They came in to see Jack; we'd kept the news about Zachary a surprise! And then Zachary just slipped out while I was laughing about having pulled it off!)

I do not agree with those who advocate "being your own midwife" or who don't get prenatal care for other reasons. I saw an OB and my midwife throughout my pregnancies; the midwife, obviously, because she'd be there for the birth, and the OB because our insurance covered him and I wanted him to be familiar with me (and vice versa) in case we had to transport.

We made all the usual homebirth preparations, we just planned on maybe not needing the midwife. I'm not sure why you're asking. I'd be happy to answer any questions, either here or by email at huntergirl@storknetmail.com.

I am planning a UC, and DH has come around. I was just wondering if anyone else was planning one or had had one... Thanks so much for sharing your story.

I am having regular prenatal care with a nurse-midwife who works with an OB at the local hospital.
