my dh and i have been dealing with infertility for 7 years now. we have read tons and tons of books about the subject. it seems like all the books we read end with the couples getting pregnant and having the baby. well, that doesn't happen for us. so these books usually make us feel like total failures.

however, i just finished reading O Come Ye Back To Ireland by Christine Breen and her husband. it is beautiful. it's a true account of their first year living in ireland. they mention about halfway through that they found out they couldn't have kids. it was so refreshing to finally have an author i can connect with. the book did not end with her getting pregnant. it ended with them talking about buying a pig farm. :)

they described their despair and then talked about the burrens region of ireland and how desolate that area is. i really connected there. my womb is barren, and sometimes my life seems empty. but knowing that others are experiencing the same thing really helps.

i don't want this post to be a downer. i received hope from this book. if i never have kids, my life still has meaning. my husband and i support one another. we still matter. i have finally found a book that didn't make me feel like i wasn't worth anything because i'm not a mother.

also, the book has some hilarious parts. my dad goes to ireland every year to visit friends. he read the book and loved it. he says it really shows the love in the irish peoples' hearts.

Hi Holly,

I'm so glad for you that you found a book that makes you feel good. As an infertility survivor, I can relate to that. You don't need to have a baby to resolve your feelings about infertility. There are many definitions of "happily ever after."

Take care,

Missy

Oh, this sounds like a wonderful book, Holly! Your post wasn't a downer at all. I looked it up on Amazon; here is the link:

O Come Ye Back to Ireland: Our First Year in County Clare (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0939149222/ref=nosim/storknet00 ) by Niall Williams and Christine Breen

What a great book discovery for you. :) Thank you for posting it here for others to discover, too!

While I have a child, I also had years of infertility and a pregnancy that ended in loss. I was just singing a song today that was what I sang LOUD around the house when I'd finally come through the dark of the tunnel. It was at a time when I could be happy just to "be", even childless. It took a long time after the loss to be anything other than just angry.

CELEBRATE THIS HEARTBEAT

I'm gonna celebrate this heartbeat
Cause it just might be my last
Everyday is a gift from the Lord on high
And they all go by so fast

I'm not shy, I won't hide
The happy way I feel inside
There's a love light shining down on me
And it's true, I can't lie
There is more to life than meets the eye
So I want to live each moment faithfully, yeah

I'm gonna celebrate this heartbeat
Cause it just might be my last
Everyday is a gift from the Lord on high
and they all go by so fast
So many people drithing in a dream
I only want to live the real thing
I'm gonna celebrate this heartbeat
And keep movin' on
Look toward tomorrow cause the past is gone

If I laugh, it's no crime
I've got great news on my mind
It's a hope that never fades way
Now I don't understand
All the mysteries of the master plan
But I'm sure the Master does
So that's okay, yeah

I'm gonna celebrate this heartbeat
Cause it just might be my last
Everyday is a gift from the Lord on high
And they all go by so fast
So many people drifting in the night
(Lonely people in the night)
I'm gonna keep the Morning Star in sight,
alright
Celebrate this heartbeat and keep movin' on
Look toward tomorrow cause the past is gone

This world is in so much trouble
All of the sadness can break you down
But if you're ever going to change it
You must show them the love you've found

Hey now, everyday is a gift from the Lord on
high
And they all go by so fast
So many people drifting in a dream
(Find the life that love can bring)
I only want to live the real thing
I'm gonna celebrate this heartbeat
And keep movin' on
Look toward tomorrow cause
The past is gone
I said the past is gone
Yeah, you know the past is gone
Oh yeah, oh, the past is gone
Movin' on
