View Full Version : Very disappointed
I went to the OB I have to see (since my midwife can't follow my case since I'm a first time VBAC) today and it really stunk. The don't allow any diabetic that has had a previous c/s to have a VBAC. Not even if the woman has had successful VBACs, it HAS to be a c/s. They made this decistion today at noon.
So, since I have to see an OB, I have to find a new one. I sure hope the other docs in the area don't have the same policy or I'd "have" to have another c/s. Since my pregnancy is going very smoothly and my sugars are in great control I may consider having an "oops" homebirth. I'd have to go unassisted which I don't have a problem with but it'd sure be nice to have somebody there in case something went wrong.

Try the birth center in Greencastle... that's pretty close to Lancaster, right? Heard great things about Gail (the midwife) there.

There is always shadow care. You can continue to see your OB and see a midwife for a homebirth on the side. Are there any midwives that would take you? I personally wouldn't want to go unassisted, but if you do plan that there are LOTS of places to go for information. There is a woman on ICAN now who is planning an unassisted and she knows her stuff!
What a ridiculous decision that is! Are they just worried about big babies?

Even though I planned my homebirths, and was attended by a midwife, I still saw my OB throughout each pregnancy. I wanted him to be familiar with me & my pregnancy, and I wanted to feel comfortable with him, in case anything went wrong. The *last* thing I wanted if I had to transport was a med student!
To prepare in case of a homebirth (planned or not;)) get the book called "Emergency Childbirth" and make DH read it cover to cover. Quiz him on things when he doesn't expect it, so he'll be prepared for everything that can happen. Also, consider renting or buying a fetal heartbeat monitor, learn how to use it, and make sure that DH knows what a baby's heartbeat is *supposed* to do during a normal labor. Good luck!
I'm not sure what exactly this practice is so worried about. I do have a midwife but in the state of PA, MWs can't assist a first time VBAC at home. I've been looking for a lay midwife to assist so I can have someone there and not worry about her losing her license. Some people have told me that there are good reasons that diabetics shouldn't have VBACs. I just don't buy that. My diabetes is under excellent control and my sugars have never been beter. I just wish the whole "once a c/s, always a c/s" stigma would end.

You might want to read this book too: <a href="http://www.storknet.com/bkstore/vbac.htm#tech">Unassisted Childbirth</a>.
I hope you are able to find a lay midwife. That sounds like a great choice! The laws around vbac are so ridiculous!
miche, do you have AIM, yahoo or MSN? If so, I'd love to talk about this whole thing..... my head is in a tizzy about all of this and you seem to know what you're talking about. That goes for anybody else here :) I'm GiggleFlwr on AIM, tiger62501 on yahoo and rachelfelt@hotmail.com on MSN.

I'm mgrassia@hotmail.com for MSN (but I never use that email address). I'm MicheTheMommy for AIM (lame, I know, but EVERYTHING I tried was taken!). My ICQ is 16747222. If I'm on one I tend to be on all because I use a program called Trillian which manages all in one interface. It's really neat! But it won't allow chat windows in ICQ, just messaging back and forth so if you request a chat and I don't respond it is because I never got the message you invited me. :)
