Help! I need a good sugar cookie recipe. The one I have doesn't cut out very well and we want to make Valentine hearts for a party on Friday.

Please post your best recipe. Thanks! :)

I happen to be making Valentine sugar cookies right now! (My dough's in the fridge chilling.) I used the recipe to make sugar cookies for Christmas, so I know it works. I got it off Food Network website:

1 cup (2 sticks) butter, unsalted
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
3 cups flour
2 tsps baking powder
1 tsp salt

Cream butter and sugar. Beat in eggs and vanilla. In a second bowl, mix flour, baking powder, and salt. Stir flour into butter mixture, 1 cup at a time. Chill dough 3-4 hours. Roll out dough and cut into shapes with cookie cutters or knife. Brush with milk and sprinkle with colored sugar. Bake on a sheet pan or a parchment lined sheet pan in a preheated 350 degree oven 10-15 mins, depending on cookie size. Remove cookies to a rack to cool completely.
Enjoy!

And here's mine:

Ceam Cheese Sugar Cookies

1 cp sugar
1 cup butter (softened)
1 (3 oz) pkg cream cheese (softened)
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp almond extract
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1 eqq yolk
2 cups flour

Mix everything except flour - beat until light and fluffy.

Lightly spoon flour in to measuring cup and level off. Add flour to mixture, mixing well.

Shape dough into 3 disks. Wrap each disk in plastic wrap and refrigerate at least one hour ( I let it chill overnight sometimes)

Take out and roll 1 disk at a time - roll to 1/8 inch thickness. Cut with lightly floured cutters

Place 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheets. Bake in 375 degree oven for 6 to 10 minutes. Immediately remove from cookie sheet.

(note: I find I have to use more flour on the rolling pin as the dough gets warm)

Have Fun!

I love sugar cookies, and have tried making them a few times….but as soon as they cool they always turn hard and crunchy instead of being soft and moist.

What am I doing wrong? Is it my recipe, or is it how I am making them? Any hints or ideas how to turn out a perfect sugar cookie?

Best Sugar Cookies for cookie cutting and frosting
3 cups flour
1 cup sugar
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
1/2 lb butter cut into 10-12 pieces
1 large egg
3-4 tbsp mild
1 tsp vanilla (or any flavor)

in a large bowl stir together flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. Add butter to flour, cut in with pastry blender until mixture resembles small crumbs.

In a small bowl whisk together egg, mild and vanilla, add to flour mixture while mixing with a fork until mixture comes together in a ball. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate 30-60 minutes.

Divide dough into 2 pieces, set 1 piece aside. Roll dough onto lightly floured surface to a 1/4 inch thickens (DO NOT ROLL DOUGH THINNER). Cut into desired shapes. Place cookies on baking sheet.

Bake in a preheated 400 degree oven or 6-9 minutes. Remove from oven transfer cookies to a cooling rack

Frosting:
3 cups powdered sugar
1/4 cup soften butter
3-4 tbsp mild
1 tsp vanilla
food coloring (divide frosting into separate bowls for many colors)

mix all adding milk 1 tbsp at a time until desired consistency is achieved.

They're probably baking too long. Depending on what shape you cut your cookies and how thin you roll the dough, they may take much less time to bake than your recipe calls for. Try taking them out of the oven as soon as they are set, no matter what the clock says. Transfer from the baking sheet to a cooling rack; this is very important because the hot pan will continue cooking them! If you don't have a real cooling rack, take one of the racks out of your oven, clean it well, and prop it up nice and steady with small balls of aluminum foil at the corners.
