I haven't been around much lately. Mostly because Timothy Ryan came 4 weeks early and spent 16 days in the NICU.
Here's his birth story:
Date: Sunday, January 5, 2003
I was battling a nasty stomach bug that had made it impossible for me to keep anything down since Thursday. I was severly dehydrated and was having some contractions. I just assumed the contractions were from the dehydration so I just kept trying to keep some liquids down so I wouldn't have to go to the hospital for an IV. I knew that if I went to the hospital too early it would greatly increase my chances of having another c/s. I'd been to the OB two days earlier and wasn't effaced or dialated at all so I was sure this wasn't labor.
I called my OB for a perscription to help with my nausea. She pulled up the results from my lab work two days before and said that some liver test came back "unfavorable" and she wanted me to go to the hospital to have more blood work done. My midwife had just got here so she drove us to the hospital and stayed there with us so she could know what was going on and help if needed. When we got up to L&D they asked if I was having any contractions. I told them I was having some so they hooked me up to the moniter. I was surprised to hear that I was having really strong contractions every minute and a half. It didn't seem like they were coming that close together. So they did an internal and I was expecting to hear that I was maybe 3cm. I was sure shocked when they nurse told me I was 100% effaced and 7cm dialated. That state of shock lasted about 20 minutes which is when a whole new state of shock set it. The doctor had come in and checked me and said I could push when I felt the urge because I was already to 10cm. The best part is that he didn't say anything about another c/s, he just said "looks like you're going to have a baby today."
The nurse told me to push when I felt the urge. I looked at her and said "what does that feel like? I've never done this before." She and my midwife explained what it would feel like and the nurse went back to writing in my chart. About five minutes later I told her that I felt the urge to push. She just said "okay" and kept writing in my chart. Later she told me to let her know when I felt the urge and I all but yelled at her "I told you five minutes ago and you didn't care."
At 5:05 I tried pushing for the first time but didn't really put anything into it until 5:12pm. Then I got serious and started screaming with each push. Timothy Ryan made his debut 14 minutes later at 5:26pm on January 5, 2003 weighing 7lb 6oz and 20 inches long.
He spent 16 days in the NICU which I'm sure will be the source of many vents in the future but I'm going to keep this positive so the details of that will have to wait.
Thank you all for supporting me through my journey for a VBAC. Now that I've done it, all my future babies will be born AT HOME :)
