DD came home yesterday with a notice letting parents know that there are 5 middle school dances held throughout the year on Fridays from 6:00-9:00. She said she's not sure if wants to go to them but asked me to sign the permission slip just in case she changed her mind in the future.
I told her that the only way she could go would be with a group of friends. I also told her that I would prefer to be a chaperone and she was fine with that.
Everyday something else comes along letting me know my little girl is growing up. :bawling:

Don't you wish you could make them just slow down. Why do they have to grow up?!

I know what you mean!!
DD has a dance coming up at her school on Oct. 3rd. The only reason I know about it is because her science teacher mentioned it at back to school night. DD has not mentioned the dance at all to me. I have heard things from other parents that they had a problem last year at the dances. Some of the kids were freak dancing. I had to look that up, and I guess it's like dirty dancing?! I don't know, does anyone else know?
Like you, if my DD ends up wanting to go, we will let her go with a group and DH or I will chaperone.

There's something really wrong with me. I read this stuff about middle school and almost start panicking! My DD is only in 4th, but I keep thinking she'll be in MS in 2 years and I'm already freaking out over this stuff. :bawling:
I really need to chill out!

Jules, just think how prepared you will be when the time comes! ;)

I don't think you can ever be prepared for what happens in middle school.

I don't think you can ever really be ready for your babies to grow up!
Our school had a few dances a couple of years ago for 3-6th graders! WHAT? WHY?!?!??!!?!?! Jeff and Kay were in 3rd grade and insisted they had to go or they would be the laughingstock of the school. So they went. Jeff came home saying it was stupid, nobody danced and all they did was stand around talking over the music. Kay cried because nobody wanted to dance with her. They did't go again until 7th grade, and came home with the same report.
Now that they are in 9th grade, Jeff goes but always says he doesn't dance but has a good time and wants to go again. Now he is contemplating asking someone to Homecoming.
And the prom is looming out there in 2 more years.
And someday a wedding.
Gah. Stop me now before I start crying!

I agree, that is WAYYY too young! I can see maybe 6th grade - maybe an end of year special thing. But 3rd, 4th, 5th grades? I don't see the point?

I just got the announcement for the first middle school dance. And yep, 5th is included (it is 5-8th grades). BUT, 5 and 6 are together, and 7 and 8 are together. That should keep things a bit more normal for the 5th graders...
Granted, no idea if Gabe wants to go... he'll probably give his usual answer: Mom, that's not part of my long-term goals.

I gotta say I'm impressed that she's fine with you being a chaperone. I would have completely died from mortification if my parents ever chaperoned a dance in middle or high school. Then again, they didn't "do" that sort of thing.
I'll have to probably stay away from being a chaperone myself...I'd be too tempted to be on the dancefloor myself  ;).
