Cupcake cakes. No slicing and plating pieces of cake. You pull one off if you want one. Easy! :D It's a bunch of cupcakes all frusted together.

Homemade play-doh for a party favor. Bunch of play-doh and cheap cookie cutters and you are golden.
Small cakes for each person and decorate their own. Same with larger sugar cookies.
Make your own pizza. Takes a while and the kids love to experiment.
I don't do many birthday parties. Can you tell?

I LOVE cupcakes. Each kid gets their own, they are all the same size, and no cutting.
We had Patti's party at the local bowling alley this year and it was great. They charge way less than indoor playgrounds, they are right here in town, and the kids love it. Bowling, pizza, and no cleanup for me! Sometimes parents stay, sometimes they don't, but we always have a great time.

Ooooooh, I LOVE this idea!!!
My best tip? Talk them OUT of wanting a birthday party.
I FINALLY convinced DD1 that it would be much more fun to take one friend out to do something special (see a movie or whatever) and have her spend the night than to have a huge party. Thankfully she's excited about that. Whew!
