Does anyone know about it? I just learned today at my level 2 u/s that the baby has it instead of the normal 3.
Any help would be great. They said it can restrict the growth of the baby but i am clueless about it really.
The good news for the baby is that I got to see him/her (they couldn't tell for sure) on the new 4 D U/s machine. It is really neat and when I get a chance I will post a picture if it scans good. Looks just like another Daddy clone!
I go back in a month and then again at least one more time for more level 2 u/s and I also have to do non-stress test but unsure when.

I posted to you on SC2... my daughter had a two-vessel cord. Please feel free to email me. The good thing is that the u/s looked good and nothing else was found. Again, please feel free to email me. ajpr2@earthlink.net
HI!
I am 34 years old and 20 weeks pregnant with my first baby. I had my first ultra sound last night and found out I have a single umbilical artery. The doctor said everything looks normal and should be fine. However; after looking up information on the internet I am getting very concerned! If anyone has any information regarding this "birth defect" please email me.Thank you!!!!!

I too was told our baby has a 2 vessel umbilical cord. We just had our level 2 ultrasound this week and were told things looked fine with the baby, but have read that so many bad things can happen. I would welcome any information about the condition.

Hi! My son was born on April 8th of this year, and he too had a two vessel cord. He had absolutely no defects and was perfectly fine. We were told when he was born that this is seen about 1 in 100 times and in 99% of the cases there are no problems. Hope this offers some reassurance for you.

Emily had a two vessel cord as well and she is fine. I also found out at my 20 week ultrasound, and was referred to a perinatologist after that. I had a level 2 ultrasound every 3 weeks after that, and a fetal echocardiogram at 26 weeks. A cord blood analysis at 32 weeks, and from 34 weeks on I went in twice a week for non-stress tests, in addition to the level 2 ultrasounds. After birth, a hearing test at 4 months and a renal and abdominal ultrasound at 6 months. We denied an amnio but that was an option as well.
I'm sure if you've checked the internet you've seen the grim stats. :( But the good news is that I read an article that said that two-vessel cords is believed to be a lot more common than previously thought, raising the odds that your baby will be normal. Remember, it doesn't cause anything on it's own except IUGR, which is very, very rare (because of this condition). More than likely it is related to something else, as a cue to look for some other defect, but not a problem in itself. And most likely, your baby will be totally normal.

My daughter had a 2 vessel cord as well. She was stillborn at 34 weeks. I'd had an ideal pregnancy with NO complications at all. I had numerous ultrasounds and all was well. One day she wasn't moving like she normally did and we went to the hospital to get checked out. That's when we found out she had died. I gave birth that same day.
We had an autopsy, genetic testing as well as countless other tests. Everything came back just fine. Her cause of death is still unknown. The ONLY thing she had "wrong" with her was her 2 vessel cord.
I guess the reason I tell you all this, is IF this was some how the reason for her death, I think you all should know that it can be serious. Please take every precaution to prevent loosing your child like I have. Talk with your doctors and have all the testing done.
I totally agree with the others. Many Many babies are born just fine with a 2 vessel cord. Just please take care of yourselves.

Thanks for all the replys.
I have talked online to many people and I am still scared but I know the doctors are watching out for us so that helps my mind a little.
~ I am so Sorry to hear about your DD, Susan-Lauren's Mom. I will keep you and your Family in my heart. (((HUGS)))
~ Mimi, I hope you got my email.
If you (Mimi or Karen) or anyone else would like to chat/talk about it, please email me at PaulaSue@storknetmail.com. I am really interesting in how eveyone else is holding up with your pregnancies. I think we are all due around the same time and it would be nice to talk to someone else going though the same tests as I am.

my son had as well a 2VC. I had several US and the level II showed nothing else wrong except the 2VC. He was born healthy at 36 weeks with 6 pounds 9 oz.
I had from 30 weeks on twice a week NST's and once a week a fluid check. 90 percent of kids with 2VC are born without any defects or anything else wrong. My doc back then said that often it goes undetected cause a lot of woman don't get US. Anyways, as long they couldn't find anything else being wrong with the baby you shouldn't worry cause normally if there is something wrong they will find anything else wrong with the baby via US.
good luck

I think that's a great idea for you guys to keep in touch. I came across two other moms who were also pregnant at the same time with two-vessel cord babies and almost three years later, we still keep in touch. All of our babies were born totally normal, btw!
We tease Emily whenever she talks about her belly button (which is quite often) that she has a "million dollar button." Almost true! And I say that the button has given me enough worry for a lifetime, so she is just not allowed to worry me any more. :)
And think - out of all the birth defects to have, this one gets cut off right after birth. :)
Keep in touch with each other, ladies ! It would be a big help, really.
