It has just been brought to my attention that E.M. Forster wrote an additional ending to A Room With a View in which everything is horrible and wrong. I am shattered. How could such a wonderful novel end terribly? Why did he change it? Why did my edition ignore this completely? Why can't I find an e-text of the offending pages so I can discover just how horribly betrayed I am?

What's next? Will I discover an unpublished addition to Pride and Prejudice in which Mr. Darcy abandons Lizzy to run off with her younger sister Lydia? Did Jane Eyre actually end with Jane going crazy and being kept in Mr. Rochester's attic? Did Anna Karenina rise from the grave and turn Vronsky into a vampire so they could share an immortal love?

Heresy! Heresy!

And I heard that the movie Pretty Woman was supposed to end with the John hitting the prostitute and then her running home and finding her roommate dead. JUST KIDDING. No, I mean, that's actually true, but I'm just kidding about the importance of that film as compared to the book A Room with a View .

I've actually heard about alternative endings to many different classics over the year, but I can't remember them now. Isn't that weird!

Well, at least you know that the author came up with the right ending in the end, so at least you have that. Have a cup of tea and you'll feel better -- I hope.
