View Full Version : What do you think???

Okay, this is my 4th pregnancy and I have been going in every two weeks to have a vaginal U/S to check the length of my cervix, since I have had 2 premature births due to spontaneous rupture of membranes.

My question is...I am 28 weeks now, do you think I would be out of line to ask my dr. to give me betamethazone shots (to develop the babys lungs) now? I know the shot series is good for 6 weeks and that would take me to week 34 and by then the baby usually has developed lungs. She hasn't made any suggestions on what I should do. My cervix length is good. But it was the last two times, my water just broke without warning. I didn't have contractions or cervical dilation. Just a bag of water that decided to break and a few hours later, baby is here.

I guess, I would feel better knowing that I had the betamethazone rather than not getting it, if my water just happens to spontaneously break.

I just don't want to ask on Tuesday and her think I am crazy.

Your input is appreciated.

I think you are never out of line asking your doctor for something of that sort. If she makes you feel bad for asking, there's something wrong with her. Maybe she won't agree, but she should at least explain why and try to reassure you. And maybe she will agree, and then it will have been a good thing that you asked.

You have to go with mother's instinct here. How will you feel if you have spontaneous rupture of membranes, as you have in the past, and didn't ask the doctor?

There is no harm in asking. Make sure the doctor gives you a reasonable answer instead of brushing you off. You will be glad you did!

let us know what your dr. says. i have delivered all my babies at 35 weeks, 2 with the steroid shots and one without and they were all fine. but i did ask my dr. with the 3rd one when i was 33 weeks and he said at that point it would do no good. maybe i should have asked earlier but luckily his lungs were still fine. either way i am interested in what your dr. has to say so please keep us updated.

I will definetly keep you all posted on the dr's response. I don't see her until next Tuesday (after Thanksgiving Holiday). But I am going to ask her.

Yes, I would have to say, I would feel tremendously quilty if I have SROM again without asking.

Thanks gals for the support.
