I keep seeing them in the stores this year and thought it would be easy to make one but I can't read a pattern. Is it that hard? I am thinking of making them for the girls and just winging it with the colors they chose. I can crochet baby blankets and such so I figure it is not that much more work.

if you can crochet a blanket i am sure you can make a poncho. last year my mom made ashley one and she didn't use a pattern, made it up on her own. so that is my suggestion to you, just make it up :)

The simplest knitting/crochet pattern is to crochet two rectangles and sew them together and add fringe. If you look around the web, you can probably find the sewing instructions in a pattern... Easy, peasy.

That is what I was thinking, Thanks for the boost to try it myself. With 3 girls I want to make them similiar or matching and I don't want to spend an arm and a leg to but them.
Best of luck with your poncho making.... here's an article that might help with the end product. Ponchos - to sew and access to other Ponch article links (http://sewing.about.com/library/weekly/aa072904a.htm)
In looking at it quickly it is for sewing a fabric poncho - however I'm sure that the sizing instructions will be helpful in deciding how much you need to crochet to get the desired effect.
Another option would be to crochet two triangles and sew the longest edges together leaving an opening for the head to come thru and then adding fringe if desired or a scalloped or fancy edge of some sort. Hope to see a pic of your finished product.

I tried it a few different ways and gave up. Went and bought her a one.
