I've been holding my breath for the last few weeks.
It looks like we're going to be having a big event in our family by the first of the year!
No, not *that* kind of event, lol!
We're opening a BIRTHING CENTER!
It will be a combo CNM/CPM center, we are going to do self pay, insurance and medicaid births. We have the BEST doctor in town backing us up, and our CNM is going to keep her hospital priv's.
We have all the equipment and furniture.
All we need now is a place!!!
Thanks for sharing my giggle! :D

COOL!
Our birth center is in an old house in the middle of town. They get a lot of low-income families there, because it is easy to get to by bus or foot. And they are just a block from the nearest hospital, so easy to transport if needed, too.
But they're outgrowing the space (dang! or, not dang...) :D So they're looking at designing a new place. Hard to find a good spot to build, that will still be accessible by bus, etc. No way to get a place accessible by foot. My DH is helping with the design work, but it is stalled until they get the location settled. Maybe in another year or so...
Good luck finding a place! A place with the right 'feel' and 'energy' as well as the right size and location...

Cool!!!
I wish you were opening it up here :) We live in a town where there are no midwives, and no birthing center. The only options are hospital, or unassisted home birth, or a midwife who lives 2 hours away which is too far in the winter up here. I know I checked into it and asked a lot of people. As dh is very opposed to unassisted home birth, we're stuck with going to the hospital. I may "accidentally" show up while I'm in transtion so they don't have time to push drugs on me :)

The birth center I went to was an old doctor's office- all but one of the exam rooms were converted to birthing rooms (look like nice, homey bedrooms, one with a couch/futon for guests if you have to stay overnight and for the first half of a visit where you just talk), a play room for the older siblings, a couch room with a TV and library for education purposes and a waiting room next to a kitchenette with tea and water always ready. It was lovely. I wish my home was decorated like that. :)
