My mother put on support hose every morning before she got out of bed, when she was pregnant, to prevent varicose veins. Does this really work? I imagine there is a genetic component, but the back of my leg has started to ache, and I'm wondering what I can do to prevent these. Any ideas/experiences?

I got a few that were relatively small and not too dark in color when I was pregnant. I hear on a radio talk show that Horsetail extract helped minimize them so I tried it and it worked for me. I don't know if it was a fluke or if thats really true. You can get it at healthfood stores and it's about $10.

*lurking from SC2* I have severe vericose vein problems in my right leg. I had to get a prescription from my doctor for the support compression pantyhose. They are pretty expensive but they are supposed to prevent further damage and increase circulation.
Your supposed to put them on before you get out of bed in the morning and take them off right before you take a shower before hopping into bed.
other things to help prevent vericose veins:
don't cross your legs
sleep on your left side instead of back or right side
don't sit or stand for too long
elevate your leg higher than your heart to improve circulation.
