I am looking for a safety gate for our stairs.

Should I have one both on bottom and at the tops of the stairs?

Thanks.

Hi Vida!!

Gates...ah fun!

What I've done is I do have one at the top (to keep from falling down the stairs) and one at the bottom (to keep from climbing up the stairs).

The gate that is at the top is a gate that is screwed into the wall.
The gate at the bottom is just a pressure gate.

You don't want a pressure gate at the top for fear it would come undone.

The gate that we have on the bottom is a gate that swings.

Ours are both pressure mounted. We have a wooden one at the bottom of the stairs and a plastic one not actually at the top of the stairs but blocking the hallway that leads to the stairs. Let me just say that I don't recommend the plastic ones at all. They are such a pain in the butt to adjust to the right size. The wooden one we have is simple.

We have one at both the top and bottom.

The gate that is at the top is a gate that is screwed into the wall. We had to use a scrap piece of wood to the spindle and mount the hook on it since the bottom part was thicker than the top part. It looks like crap but it works and is safe.

The gate at the bottom is just a pressure gate. We have a plastic one that stays fitted just for that door. I dont' have an problems with it.

Thanks girls.

Any recommendations on where to buy them? The wood ones sound safe and probably nicer to look at.

We did permenant gates (we have two staircases to 2nd floor, century home) into the wall at the top and have a pressure gate for the bottom when needed but only use it if she is having a stair day. In Canada I believe they have to be bolted to the wall at the top of the stairs but I don't know how they would monitor this? You can get the one we have at either Toys R Us or Walmart. Keep your eyes on the flyers they go on sale every so often.
