Anyone out there get the new shots to prevent preterm labor? I just talked with my dr. and she said I could get them when I get pregnant with my third. I just wanted to hear from someone how has had them.

Rita,

I don't know much about this. Did you have problems with pre-term labor before that would warrant getting shots? Hope you don't mind me asking.

Welcome!

Yes, my first was delivered at 36 weeks without complications. We were totally surprised and I had painless contractions until I was 8cm and they broke my water. Our second was born at 35 weeks following a 10 weeks of bedrest, an entire host of medications and 2 weeks hospitilized on Mag. We had an amnio done at 35 weeks which came back good on lung development, so I came off the mag and delivered that day. We would like a third, but we don't want to keep bringing babies into this world earlier and earlier. I know that I am very blessed to have had them as late as I did as opposed to 10 or 12 weeks early, but we want to be as preventative as we can.

The studies were so successful that they stopped them so that all the women getting the placebo could get the real shots. My doc. has agreed to do them when I get pregnant again, I just wanted to hear from someone who has had them. They are about 33% successful in bringing babies to 37 weeks and preventing pre-term labor which means no bedrest and no medications - a big deal to me with two toddlers in the house.

What are the shots? Do you have a name of the medication? Since I had preterm labor with both of mine, and delivered at 33 weeks last time, I'd be interested in information (sine I'm due in June)

Karen,

The shots start around 15-20 weeks and they are a form of progessertone (sp). You get one shot a week. Look up pre-term labor on goggle and you should come up with reports on the studies. Take them into your dr. and ask if he/she would be willing to try this. My dr. already agreed and says that it looks promising! Good luck, let me know if you try it.
