Rachael is officially two weeks old today. She was born Sunday, October 13th at 10:58 am, weighing 7 lbs, 12 oz. My biggest baby so far!
I had some contractions Saturday night, every 8 to 10 minutes starting at around 9 pm. We went to bed at around 11 pm and I was able to sleep off and on. Around 6 am, they got more serious. I didn't want to wake everyone quite that early, so I waited until 8 am. I woke my DH, called my midwife, babysitter and mom, and we headed out.
My dropped our two year old off with my friend, and we arrived at the hospital at 9:30. My mom met us there, and my 10 year old also stayed for the birth.
My midwife Jacquie arrived around 10, and I was already dilated to 6. She broke my water and we were surprised to find it pretty heavily meconium stained. The pregnancy was so easy and I never had any problems at all, so we don't know when baby got stressed. Jacquie did a uterine fluid infusion which made the contractions more intense, I think. She did a quick ultrasound to make sure baby hadn't turned breech, thankfully not. She called for the nursery staff to be on hand to take baby for monitoring right away instead of putting her on my chest. At around 10:45 or so I started transition breathing during the contractions. I got nauseous, then all of a sudden I had a contraction that turned into a push. I couldn't stop it, my body just did it. And she was coming! My midwife quickly got everything ready. With just two more pushes, her head was out. I had a hard time just breathing while she was suctioned. Then one more push and she was born! So I got to have her on my chest right away after all, since the nursery staff hadn't arrived yet. My older dd handled it all very well, I'm glad she got to be there.
Later that day, my parents brought our two year old to meet her sister. She was thrilled - she even sang Happy Birthday to her baby sister. We went home the next day. Rachael was pretty jaundiced by the end of the week, and had lost too much weight, so our ped ordered bili lights for two days. She's better now and nursing well, but still pretty sleepy through the night. She doesn't wake to nurse very often - Just too warm and snuggly in bed with us, I guess!
